As we all know, sometimes a little strategizing can go a long way while shopping. Sales and sale racks pop up all the time at retail stores, but if you map out some of the bigger ones, you can add great pieces to your wardrobe that aren’t just leftovers from last season. One of our favorite sales to anticipate for and shop is the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. It happens every summer, and it has a few unique points to it. Here are some of the reasons we love the sale, and important points to know if you plan on shopping it:

1) The merchandise: The merchandise that is being marked down is all brand NEW. In year’s past it has just featured all new fall/winter merchandise, but this year they’re including new summer merchandise that you can wear now. Many designers and brands actually design and produce product just for the sale, that won’t be found anywhere else (on the tag it will say something like, “exclusive for Nordstrom Anniversary Sale”)! How cool is that?

Since it’s all new merchandise, the prices will go back up at the end of the sale and the merchandise will stay in the store. So you could still buy items after the sale is over, but for full price rather than on sale. The sale ends and prices go back up on August 8th.

2.) Early access for Nordstrom cardholders: Anyone with a Nordstrom card gets to the shop the sale for a full week before anyone else. This is really the way to go, because you can insure that you’ll be able to finds all your sizes, color, etc. before the sale gets picked over. Nordstrom cardholders can shop the sale starting July 14th, and it opens to the public on July 22nd.

3.) The element of surprise: Although Nordstrom puts out a lookbook and catalog to give us a sneak peak of the merchandise featured in the sale, we won’t know everything that will be included until the sale actually starts. So the only way to know everything they’re offering on sale is to go check it out starting July 14th!

4) The VIP feel and setup: Rather than having a bunch of crowded sale racks scattered across the store, Nordstrom sets the sale up in a really unique way. They create VIP tents in each department by hanging pretty drapes from the ceiling, and merchandising the sale within that tent. They main purpose of this is to keep the sale separate from the rest of the floor so that cardholders can shop exclusively during early access, but it also just looks really cool!

5) This sale includes EVERYTHING: Women’s, men’s, kid’s, shoes, accessories, cosmetics, home; you name it! There’s not a department or category that this sale doesn’t cover. Even things that you can usually never find on sale (like high-end designers, premium denim, fine jewelry, best-selling items) will be marked down.

Now that you know why you need to shop this sale, I’m going to list a few major items that you should keep an eye out for. As I mentioned earlier, all of the merchandise is brand new and there will be tons of great stuff, but I think it’s important to look for major wardrobe pieces that you wouldn’t normally find on sale. Investment pieces that will stand the test of time are normally what we recommend splurging on, but if you can find it on sale, even better!

Fall and winter boots and booties: Brands like Frye, Stuart Weitzman, Steve Madden, Hunter and many more will have boots of all different styles and heights on sale!

Premium denim: Paige, Frame, AG, 7 For All Mankind; you name it! This is a great opportunity to get new denim for the fall and winter months.image

Winter coats: A super warm, high-quality winter coat is essential during the cold winter months. If your old one is starting to show signs of wear, fade, or is just out-dated, this is a great time to replace such an important item!

Bras and shapewear: This might seem like an odd thing to shop this sale for, but I bring it up for a good reason! Often times with bra, lingerie, and shapewear, only the trendy, bright colors or uncommon sizes will go on sale. During Anniversary Sale, even the best-selling nudes, blacks, and pieces you actually want to buy will be on sale. This is the only time during the year that many of these products will be marked down.

Leather jackets: A nice leather jacket is a wardrobe staple, and can often come with a scary price tag. This isn’t always because they’re over priced, but because high quality leather really is more expensive to manufacture. Finding the right leather jacket on sale is rare, so this sale is the perfect opportunity to find yours!

Designer totes: Smaller handbags are  fun to switch out throughout the year and change out with the trends or season. A larger tote or carry-all bag, however, can be a greater investment. Since larger totes are more expensive, I think it’s best to find one that is season-less and versatile. Designers like Tory Burch, Kate Spade, Alexandar Wang, Stella McCartney and many more will have awesome totes on sale during Anniversary.image

Candles: This might seem like a really random item to have on the list, but Nordstrom always has awesome deals on high-end candles during Anniversary! I always stock up! That’s just not something you should have to pay full price throughout the rest of the year for when you can find it for such a great deal now. My favorites are Voluspa, Nest, and diptyque!

Work staples: If you’re in the market for a new blazer, or need to update your slacks and skirts, this sale is the time! Brands like Hugo Boss and Theory will all haveexclusive designs and mark downs for the sale.

Cosmetics: It just makes sense to stock up on something you use almost every day! The beauty department will have great deals onall your favorite products, whether it’s skincare, haircare, hair tools (hair dryers, curling irons, etc), or fragrances. Bonus: They will be giving out a bunch of samples and goodies during this sale!

Basics: Basics (i.e. t-shirts, tank tops, leggings) should be replaced fairly often. If you have any that are stained, pilled, stretched, or just look tired or outdated, this saleis a great time to replace them! These basics are normally not high investment items, but they’re something that you know you’re going to be wearing a lot, especially while layering during the fall and winter. Out with the old; in with the new!
