Transition Season Must-Haves for Men

As promised, guys, here’s my round-up of AH Styling’s favorite transition/early fall pieces – head to toe. Dressing for fall is all about layering, so it’s important to update and/or refine those basics every season (i.e. t-shirts, knits, undershirts, denim, etc.). Invest in quality fabrics in neutral colors, like merino wool & cashmere v-neck sweaters and leather.

Elevated Basics (henleys, tees, etc.)

I tell my male clients all the time that when it comes to basics, my job is to help show you ways to “elevate” even the simplest and most casual outfits. Basic cotton layering pieces like t-shirts, undershirts and long-sleeved tees need to be updated every season as they have a tendency to pill, fade and lose their shape. When shopping for basics, keep in mind you want to have a mix of neutral colors: navy, charcoal, heather gray, black and white. Here are some of my suggestions for layering staples for transition season & fall:

The “Chin0-Jean”

Guys, stop what you’re doing and get. these. pants. What is a chino-jean, you say? Let me introduce you to AG’s “Everett” and “Graduate” 5-pocket pants. Firstly, these are a fantastic alternative to dress pants, chinos and jeans. The pants have a suede hand (a stylist’s term for “feel”) and are made of a stretch twill. So what does that mean? These pants are comfortable, yet structured, casual, yet refined. Most importantly, they are versatile! They also come in a variety of colors – that gets my thumbs up!

Herringbone Sports Coat

This sharp and classic menswear woven style is the perfect jacket for fall. Layered over a sweater or a button up, dressed up with a pocket square and tie, or worn casually, a herringbone jacket is a fall staple. Some herringbone jackets come in windowpane patterns, and some are more traditional so you can see the actual texture of the woven fabric. You can find them in wool/cotton blends, or wool/cashmere blends – so they’re warm and functional as well as stylish and sophisticated.

V-Neck / Half-Zip Sweaters / Thin Knits

As I mentioned earlier, it’s important to take inventory of your closet every season – what needs to be updated? What needs to retire? Knits are difficult in the sense that they can pill and wear easily, so it’s important to pay attention to pilling, pit stains (women get them, too), and fading. Sweaters are notorious for pilling, so even more necessary to pay attention to them. If you have difficulty assessing your closet situation, give me a holler (yep, I’m from the South) – that’s what I’m here for. There is so much variety when it comes to sweaters for men these days; crewnecks, v-necks, shawl collars, cardigans, 3/4 zips. You name it! Here are a few of my seasonal favorites:

Bomber & Utility Jackets

I mentioned sports coats earlier, but for more casual weekend and athleisure looks, I strongly suggest investing in a bomber or utility jacket this season. Both are sporty and comfortable, perfect for travel, watching a game with your buddies, walking the dog, Sunday brunch – you name it. Bombers have been a big trend the last year, and it’s a unisex style that looks effortlessly cool on just about anyone. Throw either of these on top of a t-shirt, thrown on a pair of jeans and your favorite sneakers, a hip pair of shades, and you’re good to go!

Slip-on Loafers

Slip-on loafers are an absolute must in my book. While traditional tassel loafers are a great option for suiting in a professional or business environment, simpler styles like these driving loafers rule the roost for fall. With rubber and athletic soles available on these styles, this makes slipping into your favorite pair of shoes even more enticing. Comfort while looking cool – that’s what most of my male clients want! Don’t we all?!

Athleisure Kicks

By now it’s clear that street style and athleisure are fashion categories that are here. to. stay. Thank god, because my clients know I live in athleisure! To build your athleisure wardrobe, you need some cool kicks. Yep – some stylish, NON work-out sneakers that can be worn with jeans, joggers, etc. Whether you’re a Chuck Taylors kind of a guy, or a bit more polished, never fear. The options are limitless!
