Transition season is here, and for most of us, that means combining light-weight fall pieces with some of our summer best to create layer-able looks that work for cooler “Indian summer” temperatures. I’m sharing with you some of my go-to pieces for your closet that will help you make the transition into fall, while temperatures may still be a little warm. So listen up, ladies!
The Utility Jacket
A MUST for fall – the utility jacket has become a staple piece for a foundational fall wardrobe. Every season, designers tweak this utilitarian piece, and this season we are seeing decorative accents like floral brocade, patches, grommets and epaulets (fancy name for shoulder pieces/decor). I style a myriad of transition season looks for clients using utility jackets because olive is a neutral color, and pairs fabulously with both solids and prints. Cotton twill is versatile and lightweight, giving you a little bit of extra warmth for the cooler early fall months – plus these jackets look effortlessly chic! Here are a few of my picks:
The Knit Jacket
Similar to the utility jacket, knit jackets add just enough warmth and coverage, and they also add a bit of sophisticated flair to any ensemble. Perfect for layering over a sheath dress for work, a cocktail dress or fete, a flowy frock, or a simple cotton summer dress. Here are some of my favorites:
The Bomber Jacket
The bomber has been trending for a year now, and this piece is completely genderless! Looks great on both men and women, and is completely seasonally appropriate. Bomber jackets are associated with street style, as they are casual and sporty – the perfect topper for a casual, travel or athleisure look. You can find them in cotton twill fabrics, satin blends, or even in a wind-breaker style (nylon).
Long sleeve knit & flowy dresses
These are a must in my book for fall! Feminine and simple, long-sleeved short dresses pair well with motorcycle boots and open-toed booties, and look fabulous layered underneath any of the aforementioned jacket styles. Here are some pieces I’ve had my eye on:
Floral / Paisley
Booties are a transition season staple! Before we jump into our over-the-knee and riding boots, booties provide just enough warmth without appearing too heavy in September and October. Several peep-toe options are available this time of year, when it’s still a little warm – why not extend that summer pedicure just a few more weeks? Booties look fantastic with jeans and short dresses, and can be dressed up or dressed down depending on what you style them with. Here are some of my picks for transition:
Layering Tops & Lightweight Knits
I always tell my clients that basics have to be replaced every season – here’s why. Cotton tends to pill after several washes, and layering pieces like tunics, short & long-sleeved tees, and even lightweight sweaters tend to look tired after a year or two. Update those basics! Look for long-sleeved cotton shirts and lightweight sweaters and tunics – easy to pair with jeans, leggings, booties and jackets! Some of my favorite basic designers are Vince, T by Alexander Wang, Caslon (Nordstrom brand), Three Dots, Theory, Michael Stars and Leith. My faves:
My clients know I’m all about the fashion sneakers! These are a must for transition season, as they pair well with casual weekend looks (think short sleeve dress with bomber jacket), athleisure looks, and are the perfect comfy travel companion. Stylish yet comfortable, these will elevate even the simplest of outfits as you head into cooler months. Some of my picks:
