Gingham is Gold

Hello lovelies!

When Victoria Beckham’s line for Target was released this spring, I was so excited to try on the collection. One of my favorite pieces was this structured gingham peplum top. If you keep your finger on the pulse of seasonal fashion trends, you might have noticed that gingham is everywhere this summer – separates, dresses – even bathing suits! A classic and timeless print, gingham is easy to pull off if it’s on a smaller scale, like this top.

Nothing screams summer more than a pair of cut-off denim shorts! As you might know, I grew up in Alabama, and down there they like to call them “jorts.” All joking aside, denim cut-off shorts are effortless and easy, not to mention great for the humid, hot summers we’re plagued with in St. Louis.

This top would look fabulous styled with crisp white shorts as well as white jeans. Another option is to style the top with a larger (yet harmonious) print, such as tailored floral shorts or the palm print we’re seeing everywhere this summer. Gingham makes it easy to play with pattern and print-mixing! The styling possibilities are truly endless. I decided to keep it simple and let the top speak for itself.

When shopping for cut-offs, be mindful of the length! I cannot stress this enough. Excessive distressing (this can make the shorts look cheap) and playing “bootie peek-a-boo” are things to watch for when shopping.

I paired this outfit with a citron envelope clutch for a little pop of color. Again, the styling possibilities know no bounds with gingham. A color accent is just what gingham needs, and navy looks fantastic paired with kelly green, citron/yellow, red, hot pink, or orange. If you struggle with print-mixing or are afraid of color, I always tell my clients to take “baby steps.” Experiment with color by using a fun accent bag, a bright shoe, or a colorful necklace.

I found this bag at one of my favorite resale stores in St. Louis – the Vault! My good friends own it, and it’s a great place to take old clothes you aren’t wearing anymore that are still current and in good condition (think Tory Burch, DVF, Joes, Kate Spade, J. Crew, and even designers like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, etc.). When we do closet clean-out and edits, we oftentimes take our client’s clothes into the Vault to resell. Stop by if you live in town!

My legs aren’t my best attribute (yep, I have cellulite), but you know what – you only live once, and it’s too damn hot in STL to hide under your insecurities during the summer! Am I right?! A great way to lengthen curvy/short legs is to wear a flesh-colored/nude or tan heel. I love a block heel because it helps distribute your weight throughout the day. These are only a couple of inches high, so still an appropriate height to wear with shorts.

Accessories are KEY at AH Styling, and we firmly believe that styling boils down to the final touches on an outfit, be it a fun scarf, an embellished clutch, or a killer statement necklace. I paired this top with a chunky turquoise necklace to break up the solid crew neck, and of course, a pair of oversized tortoiseshell sunnies. I’ve had these for years, and the style is still current! You can’t go wrong with the Jackie O look!

What outfits are you donning to keep cool this summer?
