As the mercury continues to drop, it can become challenging to brave the weather while still looking put together. To help you make it through those winter woes, allow me to point out a sliver of silver lining: post-holiday sales on designer coats! What’s better than bundling up in style? Getting that style on sale, of course! When shopping for a great winter coat, it’s extremely important to keep your specific body shape in mind. Picking an ill-fitting winter coat can result in extra bulk and volume, which none of us want! To help you filter through the overwhelming coat chaos, I compiled a guide of tips and tricks to help your find your perfect coat match! I even added a few suggestions for you, all of which you can get on sale right now at Nordstrom.com.
If you have a petite or shorter frame (under 5’4), it’s important that you shy away from anything that will overwhelm your small stature. Keep the hemline above your knee to help elongate your torso. A cropped coat would also be a flattering cut for you. When investing in a winter coat, this could be the perfect time to consider tailoring. Having an otherwise perfect coat brought up a few inches is a simple alteration, and a very savvy solution for a petite body type. If you do opt for alterations, make sure to hem the sleeves as well so that they are an appropriate length.

One note on lapels and collars to keep in mind for petite frames – make sure to keep the law of proportion in mind. If you have a smaller frame, shy away from overly large lapels and collars that will overwhelm you. You don’t want the coat to “wear you.” And you certainly don’t want the lapels to swallow you whole! Just keep them in check – everything in moderation if you’re petite or have a slim frame. If you’re medium or larger build, you can opt for a more significant collar or lapel.
Inverted Triangle (top heavy)
If you are busty with broad shoulders, but with narrower hips & bottom (hence the “inverted triangle”), try looking for something more streamline that doesn’t call attention to the top half of your body. Steer clear from large lapels that add extra volume to your chest. Look for longer lengths tailored to your body to draw the eye down for a streamlined silhouette. Try a v-neck, single breasted, semi-fitted style so that there isn’t any uncomfortable gaping or straining across the chest. Double-breasted styles are a no-no when you’re chesty!

Your long and lean stature can pull off longer lengths and more material without getting overwhelmed. Try making a statement with a coat that has a draping silhouette, bold color, or even a fun pattern. To help create the illusion of curves, try a finding a belted or cinch style. Double-breasted styles get the green light here! Also, a coat with ruffles can create feminine curves and dimension to your shape.

If you carry most of your weight in your bottom half, look for a coat that has a high collar, fur trim, is double breasted, or has some sort of statement on the top that helps to balance your bottom half. Also, look for an A-line cut that will taper off your hips and flatter your curves! The A-line silhouette is essential, as it will help bring your shape into proportion and mask any weight on your lower half.

If you carry most of your weight in your midsection, it’s best to avoid any styles that cling to the largest measurements of your body. Look for relaxed A-line or swing coat styles that don’t gather or tighten in one certain area.

The key with an hourglass body type is to emphasize the smallest part of your natural waist. Look for a belted or trench style that you can cinch at the waist. Stay away from double-breasted or oversized lapels that will add too much bulk to your bust area. Look for an A-line cut so that the bottom of the coat will flow off your body.
